The avian virus is a type of influenza virus that is hosted and transmitted by birds, but can be then transported to mammals. This particular virus is of current importance, as it has a strain (H5N1) that has infected and killed substantial numbers in Asia. It is believed that this marks the beginning of a possible future epidemic and appropriate measures are being taken. Its study is therefore of vital importance in the current research community so as to combat the virus.
